🎨 Discover Zapotec crafts – Half day cultural tour

Cultural Experience that takes you out of  the city to the villages where you can meet the artisans behind the crafts. You can visit their workshops and learn about their techniques and tools that in most cases preserve from many generations.

San Bartolo Coyotepec is the first town that We are going to visit and the only place which black Clay is produced without adding any Quimic or extra ingredient to the mix. This clay is very special since No sand is added to the Clay which makes the artisans careful when molding the pieces because stretching the piece  aggressively can break the piece  differently to other kinds of clay that hold up stretching  rudely  and not break like red clay and green clay also from Oaxaca. The Alebrijes were born from a legend, a nightmare from an artisan that made them imagine the fantastic creatures that don’t exist in this world. Alebrijes are a craft that requires a lot of time to  create because they involve many processes done by hand such as shaping the piece, making it even and then Painting the piece. Before becoming a master it can take many years. The last Craft that We are going to appreciate is: The Back stripe loom (Telar de caderas) Which is a method for producing looms(telares) up to two meters long and 45 centimeters long that can be cut into smaller pieces for table mats or  it can become table covers if the pieces is not cut. This method is very manual and it allows the creation of patterns or little figures.  This experience will allow you to see the production of the crafts from scratch to the final piece. The work of the artisans and producing and piece and the history behind each craft and the vision of beauty form each artist.
